Over 40% MBBS Students Fail in First Year Exam in Bihar

A strange case from Aryabhatt Knowledge University (AKU) came to light when the 1st -year MBBS examination result was declared on August 30 for all its medical colleges.

Out of 1100 students of the University, 447 students of the 2019 batch failed in the first professional exams. About 40% of the students failed the examination. Following this, the students protested near the administration block, demanding either promote them or recheck their answer sheets.

Around 250 students of Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Bhagalpur’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH), Gaya’s Anugarh Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH), Muzzafarpur’s Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Vardhaman Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) at Pawapuri to stage their protest.

Due to increasing unrest, police were called, and protesting students were strictly told to reappear for supplementary exams scheduled on September 2. University pointed out last moment stress to be responsible for such results.

These results were disappointing for both teachers and students regarding the compartment of many students. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) student wing also urged the vice-chancellor to re-evaluate the answer sheets citing online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic responsible for this failure rate as exams were held offline, but classes were held online.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, exams of the first-year students of the MBBS 2019 batch were delayed by three months. Earlier these exams were scheduled in March 2021.

It became a concern for the country’s medical fraternity as these students are future doctors. Out of the total failed students, 104 students were from Madhubani College and 56 from Bettiah Government Medical College.
