STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused financial havoc for millions of Americans. Even two years later, it’s still having a negative impact as thousands of people are still out of work and the soaring cost of inflation is making it hard for many families to make ends meet.
Many Americans were hoping for another round of direct stimulus payments, like those given out in 2020 and 2021 from the federal government. However, the federal government has made no indication there are plans for more money to be given out.
For this reason, some states have taken matters into their own hands, issuing payments to qualifying residents.
Here are the states giving stimulus money to residents:
CALIFORNIA
California is giving its qualified residents the most money, $1,050 in stimulus checks, that California Gov. Gavin Newsom said will help with “inflation relief,” according to CBS News.
In total, the inflation relief checks will give a total of $9.5 billion back to California residents following Newsom’s signing of the California state budget last week.
MAINE
According to Maine Revenue Services, Maine residents can receive up to $850 in relief payments by filing a 2021 income tax return showing they are a full-time Maine resident by Oct. 31, 2022.
OREGON
Low-income residents living in Oregon who show proof of working throughout the pandemic and have claimed the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit on their 2020 income tax return will receive $600 payments, according to the Oregon Department of Revenue. Individuals must also have been a resident of Oregon for at least six months in 2020, the state said.
DELAWARE
A budget surplus in 2020 led to Delaware residents who filed a tax return in 2020 getting $300 “relief rebate” payments, and couples who filed joint tax returns got $300 each. The $300 payments were issued in May 2022.
NEW JERSEY
Last year, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy approved the state budget to send one-time $500 checks to nearly 1 million New Jersey families. Again in 2022, Murphy is proposing a second $500 check to New Jersey residents who file their state income tax using a social security number instead of a taxpayer identification number.
GEORGIA
Georgia’s budget surplus was also beneficial for Georgians – single filers are slated to receive $250 rebate payments; $375 for heads of households and $500 for joint filers following legislation signed by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, according to Yahoo.
NEW MEXICO
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham approved a measure that, beginning this month, would send residents who earn less than $75,000 a year a $250 rebate payment. Additionally, a $500 rebate payment will be issued in two separate payments in June and August, Yahoo reported.
