This week is your last opportunity to claim any unclaimed stimulus or child tax credit funds. Millions of eligible American families still haven’t filed claims for their IRS benefits, the IRS stated in October. You must act before the cutoff date to receive your money if that applies to you.

Many people still waiting for payments did not file a tax return because they were exempt from doing so or needed more time. The IRS determined both of these payments’ eligibility based on tax filings. And if you belong to one of these groups, the last day to receive your money is quickly approaching.

Whether you file, a tax return affects the date for claiming your money. In general, you are not required if you file as a single person and make less than $12,550 annually.

If you don’t generally have to file taxes, you have until Thursday, November 17, to submit a simplified tax return to receive any unclaimed stimulus funds or child tax credits. The IRS is keeping the free file site available until November 17 to assist.

If you have to file a tax return but have already requested an extension this year or haven’t done so, the due date is October 17. That was also the deadline for submitting Form 1040 to avoid a late-filing fine.

You have until February 15, 2023, to register a claim if you were impacted by one of the recent natural disasters, such as Hurricane Ian. You have until Tuesday, November 15, to file if you reside in a region where the Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared a disaster, such as Missouri or Kentucky.

How much money could you get from child tax credits and stimulus payments?

  • Enhanced child tax credit: Up to $3,600 per child, or $1,800 if you received monthly payments in 2021.
  • First stimulus check: Sent in April 2020 for $1,200.
  • The second stimulus check: Sent in December 2020, is $600.
  • Third stimulus check: Sent in March 2021 for $1,400.

Remember that you should have already received your money from the first two stimulus checks if you filed your taxes in 2021.
