US to block Microsoft takeover of 'Call of Duty' maker Activision Blizzard

The US is entering a legal battle with Microsoft to block its plan to purchase gaming firm Activision Blizzard.

Regulators fear that the Xbox-maker’s purchase would damage competition within the industry, saying that games, such as the Call of Duty series, would stop being offered on non-Microsoft gaming consoles.

The Activision purchase was set to be the biggest in Microsoft history, and the company has said it will fight to complete the $69bn (£56bn) deal.

It is among the most high profile legal fights to emerge from US President Joe Biden’s pledge to take a harder line against monopolies.
