The new species are discovered by consultants Roy Teale and Greg Harold from Biota Environmental Sciences.

News reports from local media state that this new species of goanna lizard has been discovered in the Kimberly region. The Western Australia Museum also announced the discovery of new species.

The new ‘goana lizard’ species has been named ‘Dampier Peninsula Goanna’. The scientific name of this species is ‘Varanus Sparnus’.

The discovery of this species is considered a very crucial discovery as it is the World’s smallest lizard species. This single genus has 77 species, and with the discovery of a new one, it became 78.

This new species grows to a maximum of 23 cm and weighs only 16 grams. Other species of ‘goanna lizards’ can grow over three meters in length.

The group of ‘Goanna Lizards’ are known for its size. Australian desert-dwelling Perentie grows over 2 meters, whereas the renowned Komodo Dragon, which lives in Indonesia, gains a length of 3 meters.

The Komodo dragon usually weighs up to 80 kilograms and is considered the World’s giant lizard.

The World of science is now welcoming this 16-gram lizard to a family ruled by giants like ‘Komodo Dragon’ and ‘ Australian desert-dwelling Perentie’.
