Tuesday saw the swearing-in of the new Congress, which included both elected and re-elected representatives. Although the Democrats could hold onto the Senate’s control, the Republicans have taken over the leadership of the House of Representatives. And as a result, President Biden’s request for a 4th stimulus check no longer has the full backing of the legislature.
Extension Of Stimulus Checks
Millions of people wonder whether the next Congress will support President Biden’s efforts to increase federal funding. Extending the enhanced Child Tax Credit stimulus check through 2025 was one of Joe Biden’s priorities. The possibilities of another round of government stimulus checks seem slim now that the ruling Democrats have lost their majority in Congress after the Republicans won over the House of Representatives in the 118th Congress.
It seems highly doubtful that the Republicans in the lower house could approve any legislation that would result in the extension of another stimulus check, including President Biden’s preferred proposal to extend the increased Child Tax Credit stimulus check. Even a bill permitting one will not be allowed to be put to the vote.
It’s unlikely that there will be another wave of direct payments like the first three, which are accessible to most Americans. However, there is still a possibility that the federal govt would step in and provide fresh funding, albeit differently. The stimulus payment offered in 2021 would most likely take the shape of an enlarged Child Tax Credit for Parents.
Stimulus Check Opposed By GOP
However, the GOP opposed the earlier round of CTC payments despite being a top priority for the Democrats and having the support of President Biden directly.
The decrease in child poverty observed in the last two quarters of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022 was primarily due to the CTC stimulus check.
