Drew Starkey Had an Intimacy Coordinator for ‘Queer’ Sex Scenes

Among the most talked-about movies of this year’s impending awards season, Guadagnino’s most recent work has drawn criticism for featuring some of the most graphic and explicit sex scenes he has ever done, involving Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey. Starkey told IndieWire at the NYFF premiere that even though they had an intimacy coordinator, he didn’t feel the need to use them.

As part of the festival’s Spotlight Gala, Luca Guadagnino’s drugged-up gay romance “Queer” debuted in the United States. This event took place on Sunday, October 6. After its debut in Venice, A24 purchased domestic distribution rights and will open in theaters on November 27.

Before those shoots, Drew Starkey told IndieWire, “Daniel and I worked with an intimacy coordinator, but we were in movement rehearsals for like months.” By the time we arrived, it seemed as though we had been practicing jiu-jitsu for a few months. It was with this exquisite, lovely choreography and dance. We were at ease. Yes, that was a great deal of fun.

After “Challengers” became an enormous hit, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and Guadagnino got back together for their second project. Kuritzkes’ goal was to complete the abrupt ending of William S. Burroughs’ novel, which inspired it.

Kuritzkes, who is married to Celine Song, the director of “Past Lives,” said that it’s doubtful the two will ever collaborate on a movie together. We truly like encouraging one another, and we are each other’s first readers and fiercest critics. I am so proud of her and happy for the job she has done. However, we like to keep our personal and professional lives apart.

Following their collaboration on “Challengers,” Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, linked up with Luca Guadagnino to oversee the costume design for “Queer.” “He wants you to bring something to the table,” Anderson said, praising the director’s collaborative style.

Additionally, Anderson thought back on his career’s ideal collaboration: styling the late Maggie Smith. “After convincing her to do it for years and years, I was extremely fortunate that she [did it].” She would only provide five minutes, so that’s how it was shot. It fulfilled a dream. I’m quite fortunate that it took place.
