According to reports, India has right now more than 45 crore OTT users, with Hotstar leading with more than 14 crore subscribers. Amazon comes second with over 6 crores subscribers. Netflix comes third with around 4 crores, Zee5 with 3.7 crore, and Sonyliv with 2.5 crore subscribers.
In Telugu states also, Hotstar is leading with around 1.7 crores users, Then comes Amazon with over 99 lakhs subscribers. Zee5 with 48 Lakh and Aha with 42 Lakh users follow. Surprisingly, Netflix comes fifth with only 40 Lakh subscribers.
Hotstar leads due to the live buffering of IPL matches, but now it will have to face rough weather as Viacom has bagged the digital rights for Rs 20,500 crore. Hotstar will have to go back to planning with a higher focus on non-sports. Industry analysts say that Disney+Hotstar might lose out on 15 to 20 million subscribers after losing out on IPL rights.
