2023 Inflation Relief Checks: What Midwest Residents Should Know About It

The US Congress approved the first among the three direct stimulus cheques to Americans in 2020; the final was distributed in March 2021.

Since then, there have been several calls for further stimulus, but the American administration has abandoned any plans for a fourth payment.

But as inflation exploded in 2021 and 2022, many states adopted the cause and started giving their citizens credits and payments. Each state established its payout amount and eligibility requirements, referred to as anything from tax refunds to middle-class refunds.

Illinois

In 2023, Illinois residents may get up to two additional payments from the state. The first payment is a refund of $50 for single filers and $100 for joint filers’ income taxes. To be eligible, you must reside in Illinois and have an adjusted gross income of $200,000 or $400,000 for the joint filers in 2021.

A $300 property tax rebate is the second payment. This covers only registered property owners. To be eligible, you must reside in Illinois and have paid property taxes on a primary dwelling you owned in 2020 in 2021.

To qualify for this rebate, your taxable income must be less than $250,000 (or $500,000 for joint filers). Since the rebates started being distributed in September 2022, many Illinois citizens already have them. For those who haven’t, payouts will continue until 2023.

Midwestern States Not Receiving Inflation Checks

Even though some Midwestern states—like Iowa—never even attempted the relief check game of inflation, others—like Kansas—tried but failed, frequently due to legislative opposition.

The only other Midwestern state to make payouts was Minnesota, which did so in the form of $488 payouts for frontline employees in 2022. But the deadline for requesting those incentives has long since gone, reports Yahoo.
