Marilyn Manson's Defamation Lawsuit Against Evan Rachel Wood Got Dismissed

On Tuesday, May 9, a court in California dismissed significant portions of Marilyn Manson’s case against his ex-fiancée, “Westworld” star Evan Rachel Wood.

Manson’s Lawsuit

In his lawsuit, Manson claims that Wood and another defendant, Illma Gore, defamed him, purposely caused him mental anguish, and destroyed his career in music, TV, and cinema. The lawsuit was filed last year.

Manson claims they may have employed deceptive means, such as a fake FBI letter, to persuade more women to come forward with claims of sexual assault and gave them advice on how to speak about Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner.

Court Verdict

Judge Teresa Beaudet of the Los Angeles Superior Court ruled on Tuesday that Manson’s most significant allegations against Wood were baseless and that his lawsuit against her for defamation and “intentional infliction of emotional distress” must go forward without them.

Beaudet dismissed the portion of the lawsuit dealing with the disputed FBI letter, which Wood denies faking. She also removed an allegation that claimed Wood and Gore had used an iPad checklist to compile abuse allegations against Manson from other women.

The court did not make a decision about the FBI letter’s admissibility, but she concluded that there was little concrete proof that the defendants had used it to damage Manson and bring in other women. Beaudet discovered insufficient evidence that Wood and Gore wrote the checklist. She claimed that there was little chance Manson would win either case.

As per The Washington Post, Beaudet’s judgment was substantially supported by references to free speech rights and California’s anti-SLAPP law, which prohibits taking legal action to intimidate or suppress critics.
