The Ukrainian Robin Hood: a hacker drains Russian wallets and transfers bitcoins to volunteers

Why trade cryptocurrencies in Australia?

A hacker has exposed the secret crypto wallets of Russian intelligence agencies and donated the stolen bitcoins to Ukrainian volunteers, according to a report by CoinDesk.

The hacker claims to have accessed 986 wallets belonging to the GRU, the SVR, and the FSB, and left messages in Russian accusing them of hiring hackers to attack Ukraine and other countries.

The hacker also claims to have used a feature of the bitcoin blockchain to identify the wallets but did not reveal what it was. CoinDesk cited Chainalysis, a cryptocurrency monitoring company that works with the U.S. government, as the source of this information.

Chainalysis confirmed that at least three wallets were linked to Russian cyber operations, such as the SolarWinds hack and the 2016 election interference.

Chainalysis also suggested that the hacker might have been an insider or a defector from the Russian intelligence services, rather than a conventional hacker.

The hacker transferred the bitcoins to the addresses of Ukrainian volunteers supporting the country’s defense against Russia’s invasion. The report did not specify how much money was stolen or donated, but it described the hacker as a “Robin Hood” figure who used blockchain technology to fight against Russia’s aggression.
