Novak Djokovic overpowered Laslo Djere 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in the third round of the US Open, avoiding what could happen.
It was his first time leaving since 2006. The match started on Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium under the lights and lasted no more than 3 1/2 hours.
It then ended at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. The win is Djokovic’s eighth career victory after losing the first two matches.
Djokovic also raised his five career records to 38-11.
Djokovic has won three of his 23 men’s Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows and has been competing for six years, including 2021.
He did not play at the US Open last year as he could not travel to the US.
As a foreigner who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19, This rule was repealed in May.
Djere is 32nd and is attempting to reach the fourth round for the first time in a major tournament.
Both are from Serbia and have known each other for many years. They trained together, competed as doubles, and were teammates in the Davis Cup.
