Indian PM Modi inaugurates grand BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, UAE

On February 14th, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, the first-ever Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

This marked the culmination of his two-day visit to the region and symbolized a growing interfaith understanding and cultural exchange between India and the UAE.

Mr. Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, said, “The opening of this temple reflects the UAE’s commitment to religious freedom and inclusivity. We welcome people of all faiths to practice their beliefs here in peace and harmony.”

Temple of Harmony:

The BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir is not just a place of worship but a testimony to religious tolerance and harmony. Built on 27 acres of land gifted by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the temple reflects the architectural traditions of India while incorporating local influences.

With intricate carvings, ornate mandapams, and serene gardens, the temple aims to be a haven for spirituality and community gatherings for the thriving Indian diaspora in the UAE.

A Fusion of Styles:

The BAPS Mandir stands tall at 108 feet, its intricate design reflecting a blend of Indian and Islamic architectural influences. The exterior features pink sandstone sourced from Rajasthan, India, reminiscent of the traditional Hindu temple style.

Intricate carvings showcasing scenes from Hindu mythology adorn the sandstone facade, adding a touch of grandeur. Inside, the interior boasts gleaming Italian marble, creating a serene and spacious atmosphere.

The central chamber houses the murtis (deities) of Radha Krishna, Shiva Parvati, and Ganesha, while various halls facilitate prayer services, educational activities, and community gatherings.

Reactions and Significance:

The inauguration of the BAPS Mandir has garnered positive reactions from various religious leaders and community members:

Swami Brahmaviharidas, President of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha: “This temple symbolizes the growing harmony and understanding between different faiths and cultures. It will serve as a spiritual and cultural hub for the Hindu community in the UAE.”

Ms. Anjali Sharma, a Hindu resident of Abu Dhabi: “Having a temple here feels like a home away from home. It’s a place where we can connect with our faith and traditions and also share them with our neighbors.”
