'international Day Of Happiness' 2024; Enjoying Life's Simplest Pleasures

Often, people consider a successful life loaded with money to be happy. But is it so? Happiness is intangible and cannot be brought.

It is a feeling or state of mind that makes people content with what they have. Happiness is much more important than any other aspect of human life. If you lose happiness, every moment of your life, no matter how grand, becomes dull, and you feel depressed.

International Day of Happiness falls on March 20 and reminds people to spread joy with others and be happy. It encourages nations to prioritize the happiness of their citizens.

History of ‘International Day of Happiness’

In 2011, the idea of ‘capitalism’ was introduced by advisor Jayme Illien in the United Nations. ‘Capitalism’ is a way of proceeding towards the economic growth of a nation instead of ‘capitalism.’

The General Assembly of the United Nations accepted the proposal in acceptance and initiated the ‘International Day of Happiness’ in July 2012. However, it was first observed in the year 2013. The day is celebrated to acknowledge the importance of happiness in the lives of individuals and its role in making public policy.

While all the countries use GDP(Gross Domestic Product) to measure the standard of living and economic growth, Bhutan uses GNH(Gross National Happiness).

The concept implies – “sustainable development should take a holistic approach to notions of progress and give equal importance to the non-economic aspects of well-being.”
The term was adopted for the first time in 1972 by the fourth King of Bhutan, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

How to celebrate ‘International Day of Happiness?’

A great way to celebrate the day would be to try and maintain a diary or journal for everything that makes you happy daily. It can be as simple as getting a Cadbury from your friend scoring good marks in an exam or getting your parent’s permission to go out with your friends. This way one can learn to be more grateful towards life.
Go out and take up a hobby that you like.
Indulge more with like-minded people who bring out the best in you.
