Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Pune has been canceled due to unprecedented rainfall in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 131mm of rain on Wednesday, marking the highest September downpour in 86 years.
The Prime Minister was set to inaugurate a new corridor of the Pune Metro and launch several development projects valued at over Rs 22,600 crore. However, heavy rain and subsequent flooding canceled the event.
“Given the severe weather conditions and the safety concerns for all involved, we have decided to cancel the Prime Minister’s visit,” stated a spokesperson from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Pune, forecasting more heavy rain and thunderstorms. “We urge residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” advised Suhas Diwase, District Collector of Pune.
