‘Thalaivii’ Review, public response and box-office collections

Kangana ranaut

The multilingual biographical film “Thalaivii” starring Kangana Ranaut, Aravind Swamy” in the lead roles will release worldwide on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021.

Ranaut plays the role of J. Jayalalithaa, actress and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu six times. But by no means, “Thalaivii” is a political film. It is a sentimental movie at heart.

Shot Simultaneously in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu languages, the flick is directed by A. L. Vijay.

Kangana Ranaut effortlessly transforms into J Jayalalithaa and delivers a pitch-perfect portrayal of the late actress-turned-politician in Thalaivii.

To get a pitch-perfect portrayal of Kangana, prosthetic expert Jason Collins, who worked on “Captain Marvel,” was hired to design Ranaut’s looks. Kangana will sport four looks in the film.

Movie critic Taran Adarsh praised the movie and described it as “Powerful” giving it 4-stars out of five. He tweeted, “One of the most powerful biopics to release on the #Hindi screen… Loads of drama + strong emotions + bravura performances [#KanganaRanaut and #ArvindSwami pitch in award-worthy acts] are major aces.”

‘Thalaivii’ Screening Controversy

The makers of Thalaivii announced a two-week window for the Hindi version and a four-week window for the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film before its release on the OTT platforms. Multiplex chains PVR Cinemas and INOX expressed displeasure with this plan and requested a uniform four-week window for all the language versions.

The movie will be streamed on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video simultaneously, a month after its theatrical release.

Kangana used the Instagram platform to urge multiplex and theatre owners to cooperate and said, “In these times we must support each other and not bully or arm-twist; it’s our fundamental right to recover the cost of our film which we did, we may have two weeks window for Hindi version but for South, we have four weeks window yet multiplexes ganging up on us and stopping our release there as well.”

Ratings

Koimoi.com weighed in the pros and cons of the movie and gave it an abysmal rating of 2.5 stars out of five. It wrote, “All said and done, Thalaivii has a lot of good things going in its favor, but it remains half-baked only for the reason of ‘what it could’ve been?'”.
