In Sweden, this Waffle Day is called Våffeldagen, which sounded a lot like Vårfrudagen, a day that celebrated the Virgin Mary’s conception. Due to this lingual connection, Swedish people started celebrating Vårfrudagen with waffles. Therefore, these two traditions merged and the celebration of “International Waffle Day” began on March 25.
