Willoughby Police Department Officer Stacee Wright pulled over a man Saturday afternoon for going 57 miles per hour in a 35 zone. When she asked the man for his license and registration, he left the vehicle unprompted to get the documentation out of the back seat on the driver’s side. Wright directed him out of the way of traffic on the two-lane Nation Road, but when she asked him to sit on the curb, the man refused.

“I’m not sitting!” the man yelled while pointing a finger in Wright’s face. A struggle ensued, with the man pinning Wright against his parked vehicle while the entire exchange was captured on Wright’s dash cam.

A man driving in the opposite direction saw the struggle and stopped his car in the middle of the road to jump out and assist. He peeled the man off of Wright and slammed him on the ground. A second car going in the same direction followed suit, with a total of three anonymous men and one anonymous woman joining in to restrain the man.

With the help of the four strangers, Wright was able to call for a backup unit, which arrived shortly after to arrest the man. He was subsequently charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and cited for speeding and not wearing a seat belt.

“I would like to personally thank several great Samaritans and our wonderful community for their quick action and support,” Willoughby Police Chief Jim Schultz wrote in a Facebook post Monday. “I am so proud of our community and the tremendous support we receive on a day to day basis. Saturday was another awesome example. I greatly appreciate it!! Thank you!”
