History of “potato chips”
Potatoes have been around for the longest period in the culinary routine of people worldwide. However, the concept of frying potatoes came only during the 1700s. George Crum worked as a chef at Saratoga Springs’ Moon Lake Lodge and he used to make this delicious snack named “French fries”, where he used to cut the potatoes into strips and deep fried them. The dish was a favourite on the menu.
However, some customers complained that if the potatoes were cut more thinly, they would have tasted much better. Crum then cut the potatoes into thin slices, fried them and served them to the customers.
And guess what? They loved it! Hence, potato chips were born. But, Crum never patented his invention. A few years later, Laura Scudder thought that it would be better to put the chips in wax paper bags instead of putting them in glass containers or barrels, for preservation purposes.
Soon, Herman Lay founded Lay’s in Nashville and his company produced the first-ever national potato chips in the market! Lay’s Chips became a hit. People from all around the globe loved the tasty, crunchy and flavorful snack. National Potato Chip Day celebrates the history of potato chips and the amazing snack itself.
