Donald Trump was indicted over the hush money paid to actress Stormy Daniels

On Thursday, March 30, former U.S. President Donald Trump was charged with crimes related to alleged payments of hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels to prevent the scandal from spreading before his 2016 U.S. election.

The accusation

Daniels claims she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.

According to her testimony, the incident occurred just a year after he married his third wife, Melania, and more than a decade before the businessman-turned-politician, known at the time for a successful reality T.V. show, was elected president.

Asserting that the money was paid to cease her false extortionist charges, Trump denied the relationship.

The judgment

While it’s unknown what offenses the grand jury chose to charge Trump with, CNN claimed that he faces over 30 corporate fraud-related allegations in the indictment, which is still under seal in Manhattan state court.

Trump was at Mar-a-Lago when the indictment was issued and is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

Trump’s legal team has said he would turn himself into authorities in New York for his arraignment. During this brief detention at the district attorney’s office, he will likely be fingerprinted, have his picture taken for a mugshot, and make a plea before getting custody.

But it is still unclear if the prosecutors’ can show that Trump had a direct hand in fabricating documents and setting up the payments to advance his electoral prospects. The former president might also claim the hush money payments had nothing to do with his electoral campaign because they were made to shield him from public humiliation, not political gain.
