Amazon Reveals Plans To Invest $12.7 Billion Into India's Cloud Infrastructure

To fulfill the rising demand for cloud services in the nation, Amazon Web Services, on Thursday, May 18, announced plans to invest USD 12.7 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.

The Plan

AWS stated that it will spend 1,05,600 crore (USD 12.7 billion) in India’s cloud infrastructure, with a long-term commitment of 1,36,500 crore (USD 16.4 billion) by 2030.

Following this, AWS will have invested 1,36,500 crore (USD 16.4 billion) in India by 2030.

An estimated average of 1,31,700 full-time equivalent (FTE) employment would be supported annually by the upcoming investment in data center infrastructure in Indian firms.

The Indian data center supply chain includes careers in construction, facilities maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and other fields.

AWS Impact On The Indian Economy

According to the Amazon statement, AWS’s infrastructure investment in India has a beneficial rippling effect throughout the economy, particularly in digital skilling.

Through initiatives like AWS Skill Builder, which makes digital cloud skills available to anyone with an Internet connection, and AWS re/Start, a full-time, classroom-based skills development and training program that prepares individuals for careers in the cloud, Amazon claimed that AWS had trained more than four million people in India on cloud skills since 2017.

As per The Economic Times, AWS contributed to India’s GDP of more than 38,200 crore (USD 4.6 billion) between 2016 and 2022.

The news also comes at the same time as Amazon is shutting down many operations in India, which led some experts to wonder if the American company was reducing its presence here. Walmart, a major rival of Amazon, has also invested more than $2.5 billion in India so far this year.
