A terrible car crash happened where someone died. The car was a Ford Mustang Mach-E with self-driving capabilities. It crashed right into the back of a Honda CR-V stopped on the road. This terrible wreck took place in San Antonio, Texas.
The Crash Scene Was Scary
People who saw the crash said it was a terrifying scene. The powerful electric Mustang violently slammed into the stopped Honda. After the horrible impact, the cars were highly damaged.
Two government groups are now investigating what exactly went wrong. Teams from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) rushed to the crash location. They will carefully examine the wrecked cars and determine why this tragedy occurred.
More Crashes Like This Are Happening
Unfortunately, this deadly incident is not the only one involving self-driving car tech. The NHTSA and NTSB are also looking into dozens of other crashes involving cars made by companies like Tesla, GM, Hyundai, Volvo, and more.
Evaluators Say Self-Driving Tech Is Not Safe Yet
Very recently, safety evaluators tested 14 different self-driving car systems. 11 out of the 14 systems failed and received the lowest possible rating of “Poor.” The evaluators said the systems were not doing an excellent job of ensuring the human drivers were paying attention and engaged when using the self-driving modes.
With huge companies rushing to release self-driving capabilities, they may have prioritized getting the tech out quickly over ensuring it was safe and ready. Now, families are suffering from these devastating accidents. The investigations will uncover what went wrong.
