A new study published in JAMA Network on July 28 reveals a concerning trend, “a rising number of women are succumbing to alcohol-related deaths in the United States. The cross-sectional study analyzed 605,948 alcohol-attributed deaths and found that historically, more men have died from alcohol-related causes. However, the burden of alcohol-involved mortality in male individuals was still significantly higher than in female individuals, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.88. Temporal trends revealed an increase in alcohol-related deaths among both sexes, with a significantly higher rate of increase observed for female individuals than for male individuals.”.

The research also indicates that alcohol-related deaths have been on the rise for both sexes. Disturbingly, the rate of increase has been significantly higher for female individuals compared to males. The causes of these alcohol-related deaths were linked to various health issues, including alcohol-related poisoning, gastritis, cardiomyopathy, myopathy, liver disease, polyneuropathy, and pseudo-Cushing syndrome, among others.
