The American Tradition

In the early days of America, the iconic Conestoga wagons played a crucial role in shaping the country’s driving norms. These wagons, which carried the belongings of pioneers westward, had their controls on the left side. This meant the wagon drivers walked alongside the horses, towards the middle of the road, with the wagon on the right. As trade and travel increased, America’s first major highway, the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Road, mandated that all traffic stay to the right, following the Conestoga wagon tradition. By 1804, New York became the first state to officially require right-hand traffic on all roads.

The French Revolution’s Impact

While America solidified its right-hand driving tradition, the French Revolution played a pivotal role in shaping the left-hand driving norms in other parts of the world, particularly Britain. The revolutionary government aimed to abolish class distinctions by forcing everyone to use the same side of the road, which was traditionally reserved for the poorer pedestrians. This policy was later spread by Napoleon’s armies as they marched through Europe, influencing many countries to adopt right-hand driving.

Britain’s Unique Tradition

Britain, however, remained an exception to the French influence, possibly due to the prevalence of small carriages and individual horse riders. Historians suggest that riders preferred to stay on the left, keeping their right hand free for greetings or, if necessary, for fighting off potential threats. This tradition became ingrained in British culture, leading to the establishment of left-hand driving norms.

Challenges and Precautions

Switching driving sides can have real consequences, and there have been serious accidents in the past. When driving on the opposite side, experts recommend taking extra precautions, such as keeping the radio off, talking to oneself to maintain focus, and checking for traffic from the unfamiliar direction. Having a passenger as an additional set of eyes can also be helpful. Rental car companies in countries like the UK take measures like providing “Drive on the left” stickers and wristbands to remind visiting drivers of the local driving norms.
