Sleeping might seem like one of the trivial activities in human life. But, do you know that if your body is not getting enough sleep, then it can be disastrous to your health in the long run? Sleep-deprived people find it difficult to carry on with their daily chores. They are drowsy, lack attention and are always irritated. In the long run, people can develop other serious health problems as well that might cause death in the worst scenarios. World Sleep Day falls on March 15.

History of “World Sleep Day”

World Sleep Day was hosted in the year 2008 as an awareness program to help people who suffer from insomnia.
The American Sleep Association reported – “Over 50 to 70 million people have some type of sleeping disorder, over 25 million have sleep apnea, and the most commonly reported sleep problem is insomnia (the inability to sleep at all or for a full night).”
World Sleep Day focuses on various aspects of sleep problems as well as sleep medicine and procedures to combat sleeping disorders.

Doctors such as Liborio Parrino, MD, Italy and Antonio Culebras, MD, were the first co-chair members of World Sleep Day and formed a non-profit organisation known as the World Sleep Society, which researches on sleep-related problems faced by the world. The Day is celebrated to inform people about sleep-related problems and help them out.
