International Mermaid Day 2024; A magical species of the underwater world

Sightings of Strange species with upper bodies resembling that of humans while lower bodies of fish have been recorded through generations.

These creatures are called “mermaids” and their male counterparts are often called “mermen”, to be more specific. The first tale of the magical creature can be traced back to Assyria around 3000 years back!

International Mermaid Day celebrates these magical species whose stories continue to enchant us to this day! The day falls on March 29.

Origins of ‘International Mermaid Day’

Our mother earth abounds so many varieties of marine species that it may trick your eyes into thinking they are fish-like people from a distance. Famous explorer Christopher Columbus has also talked about spotting strange fish-like human creatures in the ocean but unlike the goddess-like beautiful mermaids portrayed in movies, Columbus described them to be “ugly.” There are chances that he might have seen a seal or manatee. To date, there are no official recordings of the existence of such a creature apart from stories and tales.

Mermaids are portrayed in various dispositions around the world. Some believe them to be vile creatures with a captivating voice who lure sailors to death with their singing.

Whereas, some depictions portray them as beautiful, benevolent creatures who bring you luck and prosperity if you encounter them. The widely known depiction of the mermaid was Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale – “The Little Mermaid”, which was later turned into a Disney movie. The movie became a favourite amongst all, portraying the little mermaid Ariel.

International Mermaid Day began in 2018 to mark the launching of the new series ‘Siren’ by Freeform TV Network.

How to Celebrate the Day?

You can watch a movie on Mermaids. If you have children at home, you can read out fairytales based on mermaids to them.

You can also throw a mermaid-themed party. You can dress up in shimmery costumes like that of Princess Ariel from the movie “The Little Mermaid” and order themed cakes and snacks.

You can help save the ocean, which is the habitat of mermaids and other aquatic creatures, by cleaning the beach and donating to organizations that protect marine life.
