In some countries like Japan, Valentine’s Day includes women giving chocolates or gifts to men they love or admire. White Day comes a month after Valentine’s Day on March 14 and on this day, women become recipients and receive gifts and chocolates from men. It is a token of appreciation returned by the men who have received chocolates from women on Valentine’s Day. White Day is celebrated mainly in Japan, South Korea and China.
History of White Day
The first White Day took place in the 1980s. It all began with a person named Zengo Ishimura who owned a confectionary shop in Japan. In 1977, Ishimura received a letter from a female customer who emphasized the unfair tradition of only men being the recipients of chocolates and gifts on Valentine’s Day. Ishimura then came up with an excellent marketing scheme and began selling a new candy which is a marshmallow with chocolate filling. The confectionary declared March 14 as Marshmallow Day. Over time, other sweets were added along with marshmallows and soon it developed into a kind of tradition where males gifted their women chocolates. The Day came to be celebrated as White Day.

On White Day, men gift sweets to the women they love or are interested in. But, the type of sweet or candy that the woman receives tells a lot about the man’s feelings for the woman.
Marshmallows
Though White Day began with marshmallows, in the modern day they are considered to be vintage and outdated. Also, marshmallows are squishy and melt easily. If a man gifts a woman a marshmallow, it just means he is not interested in her.
Cookies
Cookies are sweet and crunchy. It signifies platonic friendship. If a female gets a cookie, it means the man just wants to remain friends and nothing more. Mostly, heart-shaped cookies are given.
Macaron
Macarons are soft, chewy and super delicious. Whoever receives this rare French dessert is cherished by the giver.
Candies
Candies are the ultimate deal during White Day, especially hard candies since they last for a long time. If your man gifts you candies, it means he loves you.
Gourmet white chocolate is also shared between people who have mutual romantic feelings.
