Pictures: Manna Dey funeral attended by very few people in Bangalore

Hindi cinema’s celebrated singer Manna Dey, 94, died on Thursday morning, Oct 24, 2013 around 4 a.m at Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital in Bangalore while being treated for renal failure and respiratory illness.

K.S.Vasuki, spokesman of the hospital told reporters that he was under treatment for the last four months and breathed his last.

The veteran singer’s body had been kept for public viewing at Bangalore`s Ravindra Kala Shetra J C Road, Bangalore from 10 am to 12 pm allowing people coming to pay their last tribute.

 

His dead body was later cremated at the Hebbal crematorium. President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, in his condolence message said that the nation has lost a versatile artist of extraordinary ability who mesmerized listeners with his enchanting voice.

Born in Calcutta as Prabodh Chandra Dey, Manna Dey was better known by his stage name. Manna Dey had started his singing career in 1943 with the film “Tamanna”.

He won the Best Male Playback Singer National Award in 1970 and was honoured with Padmashree Award in 1971.

He has also been awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.His famous songs include “Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai”, “Aye Mere Pyare Watan” and “Laga Chunari Mein Daag”.

He had recorded more than 4000 songs from 1942-2013 in Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi languages.
