Megumi points out that summoning a Shikigami is possible by a Ten Shadows Technique user but cannot be controlled until they have the power to exorcise it. He summons Mahoraga, who has never been used by anyone and is considered the most powerful Shinigami.

This was the cue for him to start performing an exorcism, while dragging Haruta into it on the threat of killing him. Instead of letting him die, Megumi decides to use Mahoraga and avoid his dying because he knows Haruta will kill him. When Mahoraga is close by, Sukuna feels and takes off towards Megumi.

Sukuna stops Haruta’s death from stopping the ceremony and taking away Megumi’s life as well. The King of Curses tells himself that he needs something from Megumi before charging at Mahoraga in order to save his life. When Mahoraga is defeated by Sukuna, Megumi would be safe and the exorcism rite would be ineffective.
